Weekly Korean IP Headlines 11.29. 2012

On December 3rd, MK News reported that Samsung Electronics is spending around 18 billion dollars to 23 billion dollars per year for patent management fee.  The total management fee reaches multi-billion dollars including non-operation expenses.  Samsung’s work-related invention compensation system has paid 5 billion dollars for recent 10 years to encourage employees’ invention activity and patent applications.  According to the article, Samsung has been paid two different incentives for work-related inventions: when one patent gets the loyalty from another company, and when one patent reduces or prevents to pay loyalties to other companies.  Samsung paid incentives for 1200 cases during the past10 years and there are 350 employees who got the patent incentives for last 3 years.  Check out the original article here.

PRNews reported on December 7th, KIPA hosted Seoul International Invention Fair 2012 on November 29th to December 2nd in COEX Hall A, Korea.  KIPA hosted approximately 700 new-generation inventions.  The grand prize winner of this years’ SIIF was Minchi Cung and his five co-inventors from Taiwan who developed an Extraction Device for Different Phases and Polar Ingredients.  Hyundai Mobis won the semi-grand prize by presenting its inventions, Car Flap Control System and Its methods of Control. SIIF also organized the business matchmaking pavilion for domestic and foreign buyers in order to promote business activities.  The invention fair played a special role as it was held along with the Korea Invention Patent Exhibition 2012, and 2012 Trademark-Design Right Exhibition this year.  Check out the original article here.

Korean medical news agency Medipana reported on 8th, As the aged population increases, the patent applications in the field of the medical instruments for aged people such as neurological equipments also increase.  Korea Health Industry Development Institute analyzed the trend of medical instruments for senile disorders.  According to the institute, an average annual growth rate of patent applications for medical appliances has been increased for last 12 years.  Among these applications, patents for neurological equipments and otolaryngological appliances are rapidly increasing.  Check out the original Korean article here.

Korean Economy Today reported on 9th, the recent wave of metro-sexuality influenced the trend of men’s cosmetic brand trademarks.  According to KIPO, trademark applications combined with the words ‘Homme’, ‘For men’ which express the ‘man’ in 1970s were only 4 cases.  However, this case has been increased; 22 cases in 1980s, 56 cases in 1990s, and 246 cases after 2000s.  Eventually, the cases increased to 36 cases in 2011, end of October 2012 was 38 cases.  According to the article, the phenomenon cuased by men's viewpoint change followed by time changes.  KIPO also stated that “Cosmetic products are known for women’s necessities in the past.  However, the change of life style and the notion of beauty caused men to have their own cosmetics to satisfy the desire of better appearance.”  Check out the original article here.  BBC News also reported this interesting phenomenon on December 3rd.  Check out the link here.
