Feel the action as if you're there

 

With the easing of distance, the number of people heading to the cinema is gradually increasing. Today I’m going to talk about patents related to this film screen.

 The reason we watch war or action movies is probably because of the thrilling, action-packed scenes. 2D Screen may not be good enough for these movies because it’s too simple flat. In order to meet the needs of consumers who feel like me and to compete with OTT (Over The Top) platforms, movie theaters are providing special screen with special technology. In Korea, 4DX, ScreenX, SuperPlex G, Super 4D, and Megabox's Dolby Cinema are just that kind of screens. Among them, today, let's take a look at the patented technology in the 4DX and ScreenX of CJ CGV, multiplex cinema chain in Korea.

 

The movie is screened on three sides? I'm sure many of you have heard of 4DX.

 4DX is a special screen to experience the five senses, where you can feel various effects such as wind, light, fog, fragrance, and vibration, along with motion seats that move according to the movie scenes. 4DX seems to be familiar to relatively many people. In contrast to this 4DX, ScreenX technology may still be unfamiliar.

ScreenX is CGV's proprietary technology that allows you to enjoy movies more vividly by using all three sides- left wall, right wall and the front screen.

 This is a 'multiple screening system' patented by CGV, and the present invention is characterized by projecting images on the left and right walls of the front part or more, including the front screen on which images are generally projected. Through this, it is possible to provide three-dimensional and immersive images to the audience, and images from multiple viewpoints are possible, providing the audience with a sense of reality as if they exist in the space depicted by the image.

In addition, CGV is also operating 4DXScreen, a combination of 4DX and ScreenX. You can enjoy the five senses experience and multi-screening at the same time, boasting a much better immersion.

‘Effect adding system and method for multi-projection'

 This invention relates to an additional effect system and method for multi-screening, and is a patent including a device for implementing an additional effect unexpected for video screening in the features of the multi-screen screening system described above. These additional effects devices have different directions for the effects depending on the projected image. For example, when a wave hits from the left, water and wind are shot to the audience from that direction.

From this drawing above, you can see that the scene of breaking ice from the projection B spreads to A, and at the same time vibrates the seat, so you can watch the movie with feeling like you were there.

When did the production company start preparing for this extended screen?

According to team leader OH, Yun-dong (the team leader of CJ 4DPLEX’s studio team), CGV directly produces both side screens with computer graphics. They said that they receive the CG settings of the main story from the production company and make the screen CG with the same design and same tone. It’s not true that the production company makes a video or expands the existing screen.

 It seems that our cultural life has become more enjoyable through ScreenX technology, which was created through the sweat and efforts of countless people. The ScreenX technology is now being studied to make it more vivid by extending the screen to the ceiling and floor including three sides. We look forward to more wonderful experience in the future.

PATINEX 2022

 

The International PATent INformation Expo (PATINEX) 2022, was held at the Korea Science and Technology Center on Sept1-2.

The event was held under the title of “IP Data, a Pioneer leading the New Digital Era”,

It was a great time to meet the new products of intellectual property service and its providers and learn how to use patent information that will lead the trend in the digital age in earnest.

 At this event, WIPS introduced a new product, “WIPS PRISM,” which is AI patent classifier, improves the efficiency of patent classification by utilizing deep learning algorithms. In addition, various events were held together.

On the second day, JO Minji, a patent attorney at WIPS, gave a presentation on the introduction of WIPS PRISM under the title, “The beginning of strategy to secure original technology, WIPS PRISM.” It is a revolutionary patent classification service that can classify 50,000 cases in just 30 minutes with one time training. I believe it was a good news for those who have been tired of patent classification work for a long time.
