Weekly Korean IP Headlines 11.13. 2012

We will touch on the latest Korean IP news headlines from WIPS Global blog.  Still, Apple and Samsung case continues to evolve. Now the ‘Smart War’ is entering a new phase.  Let’s take a look at what else is going on Korean IP industry.

On November 6th, Mobile & Apps posted an article about Apple and Korea.  But this article is different from the so called ‘Smart War’ articles.  Apple recently released its own mapping application through Apple’s latest iOS6.  In this new map, Apple used Japanese name ‘Takeshima’ for Korean island ‘Dokdo.’ The article noted that an unnamed Korean government official told “We protested to Apple’s Korean unit ...the new reference is unacceptable and it should be marked as the Korean name Dokdo...”  Check out the detailed information here.

Korean economic daily reported on 6th, CEO of Samsung placed a meeting with Samsung design core members after one month business trip.  Mr. Lee, the CEO of Samsung, mentioned that “Design is the key.” He also emphasized the design power. Strive to secure outstanding design workforces; Samsung has invested more than 10 billion dollars to build design R&D center in Seoul. Check out here for more information.

On November 10th, Mobile & Apps reported Apple’s news again.  The article noted that Apple has removed the Java code on its UK web site which was using to hide a Samsung apology issued after losing a patent case in the country.  As WIPS Global blog reported last week, Apple had to reissue their apology on UK website because of their attitude toward UK court order and the statement.  However, Apple included code which resized the central image and used some tricky ways to hide the apology. As a result, visitors to the site could not see the apology to Samsung without scrolling down to the bottom.  Now, Apple needs to pay Samsung’s legal costs on an “indemnity basis” which is even worse than the original court order.  Check out the detailed information here and check out the full transcript of The Court of Appeal of England and Wales.
