Various Patents Related to Augmented Reality (AR) Technology

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that adds virtual images to an image or background of the real world. Several companies are developing various augmented reality-based technologies and continuing their research to apply them in different fields.

AR Head-Up-Displays (HUD) by Apple Car
Apple, which is currently preparing for their electric self-driving vehicle, has applied for patent related to AR display. Apple's augmented reality HUD technology displays various information that are necessary for driving, such as lane control and risk avoidance, on the windshield of the vehicle by combining it with the actual external environment. According to the patent document, the vehicle speed indicator can be spatially positioned depending on the speed limit of where you are driving and the speed of the vehicle you are driving. This allows the driver to safely check driving speed or information that is difficult to see from the line of sight, while keeping an eye on the front.

World’s first AR glass by LG Electronics
LG Electronics has launched world’s first AR glasses called “U+ Real Glass”. By wearing U+ Real Glass, users can visualize the smartphone screen in the space in front of you through the lens, like a beam projector that is only visible for the user. Smartphone is used to control the screen. In the drawing below, 6031 is the image area, and the augmented reality display printed from the adjustment of this area is 601 on the drawing. The screen size can be adjusted up to 100 inch through user control and other content can be displayed in the blank space next to the content you are watching.

AR Glasses by Facebook
For the past 10 years, CEO of Facebook has constantly argued that artificial reality glasses will become the universal smart device instead of smartphones, which we are currently more familiar with. Facebook has recently unveiled a cranial nerve-based new technology test that uses a wristband-type wearable device to control AR glasses. The user can perform various activities such as getting music recommendation based on user preferences or typing using a virtual screen/keyboard, just by moving fingers lightly after wearing the AR glasses and wristband. This wristband is expected to be commercialized earliest in 2030, but a product with some features included is expected to be released by the end of this year.
