On July 1, 2021, USPTO has announced Artificial Intelligence Patent Dataset (AIPD) that can distinguish US patent documents related to artificial intelligence (AI) within 13.2 million US patents.

USPTO has announced that they will support researchers, policymakers to learn about the impact of AI on inventions through the new AIPD.

AIPD was built using a machine learning model of AI component technologies, and the machine learning approach used to generate the dataset performs better compared to the traditional method.

This dataset consists of a total of two files. The first data file distinguishes between US patents registered from 1976 to 2020 and pre-grant publications from 2020 onward. It includes machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, speech, knowledge processing, AI hardware, evolutionary computation, and more. The second data file contains patent documents used to train machine learning models.

On July 1, 2021, Seoul Semiconductor, a global LED company, announced that the US District Court for the District of New Jersey to permanently has made judgement of banned component sales of automotive lighting brand LED products that infringed on Seoul Semiconductor's patents.

The New Jersey District Court in the United States ruled that 13 LED products sold through the large automobile component platform ‘Parts iD’ in the United States infringed Seoul Semiconductor’s 12 WICOP patents. This is a judgment that has been concluded more than a year after the lawsuit filed in May 2020, and the action of “banned component sales” came into effect as soon as the judgment was made.

WICOP is designed to be compact and easy to design a small and thin lens unlike the existing method using wire bonding and packaging. It is a patented technology developed by Seoul Semiconductor for the first time in the world in 2012.

WICOP has been adopted in 102 car models, which account for about 10% of the global car market, to be used for headlamps, daytime running lights, and turn indicators. WICOP is also widely used in display products such as TVs, smartphones, and tablets, which has occupied 20% of 2 billion TV manufactured worldwide.

This is the second decision to ban sales related to WICOP technology, following the decision to ban the sale of Philips TVs in October 2019. Various nationalities product, including Taiwanese company DEPO, are identified as 13 LED products that infringed on WICOP patents.

For 3 years since 2018, Seoul Semiconductor has won 39 lawsuits in 6 countries regarding their 14,000 patents for LED technology. Judgments such as import ban, product recall orders were made previously and this time, judgement of banned component sales was made.
