Marvell, $1.2bn Patent Infringement Fine over Hard Disk Chips

Marvell, the US-based hard drive producer, was sentenced to pay nearly $1.17bn for infringing patents held by Carnegie Mellon University, Wall Street Journal reported. It was accused of infringing patents including disk drives used in personal computers server systems. Marvell said to Journal that they were disappointment by the verdict and would convince the judge to void and reverse the judgement.

Marvell’s headquarters is located in Santa Clara, California and manufactures a wide array of products including high-performance processors, broadband & wireless transceivers, storage controllers, and LED processors.

Carnegie Mellon University filed its lawsuit in 2009 and the patents cover a “method and apparatus for correlation-sensitive adaptive sequence detection” and “soft and hard sequence detection in ISI memory channels.” Read more details on macworld.com.
