IBM keeps its first spot for 20 years in a
row. IBM announced that they filed 6,478 patents in 2012 and had largest number of patents, followed by Samsung and Cannon. The inventions include analytics, Big Data, cybersecurity, cloud, mobile, social networking and
software defined environments, as well as industry solutions for retail,
banking, healthcare, and transportation. IBM’s patent files are more than other 8 companies combined (Accenture, Amazon, Apple, EMC, HP, Intel and etc). And, the number of filing increased by 5% last year.
“We are proud of this new benchmark in technological and scientific creativity, which grows out of IBM’s century-long commitment to research and development,” said Ginni Rometty, chairman and CEO, IBM.

Samsung took second place with 5,081
patents. Apple got 22th rank on the patent list with 1,136 new patents in 2012.
