LG announced on January 2nd, 2013 that they would make the first 55-inch OLED TV available to the public next month in South Korea for a cost of around $10,000.
According to AP, LG Electronic Started taking pre-orders on January 2nd for the world’s first big TVs that use an advanced display technology promising clear images on wafer-thin screens. Based on LG’s statement, the new TVs will be available in North America, Europe, and the rest of Asia before the end of March.
The new TV model 55EM9700 is the successor to the 55EM9600 that won CNET’s highest honor at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2012 but it never actually shipped. Despite the high cost and difficulties of manufacturing, OLED TV’s energy0efficient display technology makes it possible to manufacture thinner televisions and more clear images.
Currently, there is only two companies in the world have a capacity to make large screen OLED TVs: LG and Samsung. Samsung declined to comment on the availability of its OLED TVS according to AP.
