UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) launches ‘One IPO Search’

 On January 22, 2025, the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) announced the launch of the ‘One IPO Search’ service1).

(1) Background

∙ The ‘One IPO’ innovation program is a UK intellectual property service modernization program that provides new digital services for the comprehensive modernization of UK intellectual property services.

∙ In April 2021, UKIPO launched the ‘One IPO’ service to realize full digitalization and integrate patents, trademarks, and designs into a single system, thereby providing creators with world-class intellectual property services and an intellectual property environment.2)

(2) ‘One IPO Search’ service

∙ The existing online patent search tool ‘Ipsum’ service, which had been in operation for approximately 13 years, has been replaced by the ‘One IPO Search’ service.

∙ The ‘One IPO Search’ service has improved the accessibility of searches related to UK patents through the following features:

∙ The pre-test results for the ‘One IPO Search’ service showed positive results, with 82% of users responding that the service content reflected their needs in questions related to user demand, and 86% responding that it was easy to use in questions related to user convenience.

(3) Future Plans

∙ In the future, the ‘One IPO Search’ service will add AI-assisted search, integrated trademark and design search, and new API feature for accessing large amounts of data.

∙ In addition, the UKIPO plans to provide new digital services, including a simplified patent application service and an innovative customer account management system, by the second half of 2025.

USPTO Announces New AI Strategy to Strengthen the Implementation of Innovation

On January 14, 2025, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy1) to strengthen the responsible implementation of innovation

The strategy was announced to realize the potential of AI across USPTO operations and the intellectual property (IP) ecosystem. The key contents are as follows:

(1) USPTO AI Vision

. Unleashing America’s potential through the adoption of AI to drive and scale U.S. innovation, inclusive capitalism, and global competitiveness.

(2) USPTO AI Vision

. Foster the research, development, and commercialization of AI in the domestic and global economy.

. Leverage AI effectively and responsibly to empower our staff, optimize our operations, and deliver value to our stakeholders.

. Empower current and future innovation and investment in the same through data and research.

(3) USPTO AI Focus Areas

. Advance the development of IP policies that promote inclusive AI innovation and creativity.

. Build best-in-class AI capabilities by investing in computational infrastructure, data resources, and business-driven product development.

. Promote the responsible use of AI within the USPTO and across the broader innovation ecosystem.

. Develop AI expertise within the USPTO’s workforce

. Collaborate with other U.S. government agencies, international partners, and the public on shared AI priorities


The USPTO, agencies under the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and the U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) participated in developing this strategy

In addition, in 2022, the USPTO formed the AI ​​and Emerging Technologies (ET) Partnership2) to collect public input on topics related to AI and innovation, biotechnology, and IP policy
