Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. and Jack in the
Box Inc. has settled a trademark dispute over the term “chipotle”.
According to Bloomberg Business Week,
Chipotle sued the burger chain Jack in the Box for using the work ‘chipotle’
for their new burger’s name. Chipotle claimed that the company used the term
which was already known as its Mexican food brand. Moreover, customers’ would assume
that the two companies had partnership with each other.
Chipotle Inc. started its business in 1993 and
registered the term as trademark in 1998. The word ‘chipotle’ is originally and commonly
used for smoked dried jalapeno.
