Aereo, a technology company based in New
York City that retransmits TV signals via the internet, won a case over CBS,
NBC, ABC, Fox and other US broadcasters, NY times reported.
"We are grateful for the court’s
thoughtful analysis and decision and we look forward to continuing to build a
successful business that puts consumers first,” said Aereo Chief Executive Chet
Kanojia to LA times.
The broadcasters didn’t expect Aereo’s
winning and they were disappointed with the judge. "Today’s decision is a
loss for the entire creative community," said a joint statement from Fox,
PBS and Univision and other broadcasters. "The court has ruled that it is
ok to steal copyrighted material and retransmit it without compensation."
LA times wrote.
Aereo was sued by broadcasters who argued
that Aereo infringed their copyrighted material in 2012. On July 11, Federal
Judge Alison Nathan denied this injunction, citing as precedent the 2008
Cablevision case, which established the legality of cloud-based streaming and
DVR services. (source : Wikipedia)
