On July 28, 2026, the Ministry of Intellectual Property (MOIP) announced that design patent filings utilizing cultural heritage reached 405 cases in the first half of 2026—a roughly 96% increase compared to the same period last year. Simultaneously, MOIP announced that it is hosting the "2026 1st Cultural Heritage-Based Design Contest."

Designs that merely reproduce cultural artifacts as-is or simply combine existing forms are difficult to register; a design must embody new aesthetic value to secure registration.

Hosting the "2026 1st Cultural Heritage-Based Design Contest"

MOIP is holding the "2026 1st Cultural Heritage-Based Design Contest" targeting designs inspired by cultural heritage that are validly registered and currently in use as of August 2026. The application deadline is August 5.

Design rights holders can submit entries directly, or third parties (such as consumers) can nominate designs. Applications can be submitted online via a QR code or the official website by entering the design application/registration number and the rights holder's name. 1)

 MOIP Announces Patent Analysis Results for Aviation Fuel Derived from Waste Plastics

On May 26, 2026, the Ministry of Intellectual Property (MOIP) of South Korea released the results of its analysis on patents related to aviation fuel derived from waste plastics. The study examined filings made between 2019 and 2023 across the world’s five leading intellectual property offices (IP5).

As jet fuel prices skyrocket, interest is surging in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)—an eco-friendly alternative. Made from renewable resources like used cooking oil, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80%.

Pyrolysis is a technology that heats waste plastics to high temperatures of 300–500°C to break them down into gases and liquids. Through this process, plastic is converted back into "pyrolysis oil," which closely resembles crude oil.

While "waste plastic-derived aviation fuel" made by refining this pyrolysis oil is not yet included in official SAF certification standards, it is gaining significant traction as a next-generation SAF feedstock. This is due to its distinct advantages: securing a stable raw material supply chain and turning waste into valuable resources. Consequently, global corporations are actively ramping up R&D in this field.

An analysis of 2,036 patents related to waste plastic-derived aviation fuel revealed that filings by South Korean nationals surged 7.6-fold from 2019 to 2023. This explosive growth earned South Korea the second-highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) globally at 66.1%.

Its CAGR during this period reached 66.1%—the second-highest in the world behind Denmark (103.1%). France (62.7%), Saudi Arabia (29.4%), and the U.S. (28.8%) followed in growth rate.

In March 2026, the European Patent Office (EPO) announced that it had co-developed and integrated an AI-powered Optical Character Recognition (OCR)1)  solution into its operational systems in collaboration with the European AI firm, Mistral AI.

Improved Efficiency in Examination and Prior Art Searches: Structuring previously difficult-to-analyze documents allows EPO patent examiners to conduct prior art searches and technical evaluations more efficiently.

Future Plans

The EPO plans to continuously refine the AI-powered OCR solution and expand its scope of application. Moving forward, the Office will explore the introduction of additional AI technologies to further optimize operations across the entire patent system.

1) Optical Character Recognition (OCR): A technology that automatically recognizes characters in scanned documents or images and converts them into digital text data, enabling document search, analysis, and data utilization.
