Weekly Korean IP Headlines 11.29. 2012

We will touch on the latest Korean IP news headlines from WIPS Global blog.

According to Korean Medical industry, Korean major hospitals are trying to make profits with their R&D results.  Korean e-today reported on November 28th, major hospitals are commercializing their medical study result by applying patents.  The most active hospital is the Severance hospital in Seoul.  Severance hospital hosted ‘Severance Patent Fair’ on November 25th, to promote and transfer their patented technologies to medical businesses.  During the fair, Severance hospital introduced around 27 technologies among 700 patented technologies.  Since 1996, Severance hospital applied 657 patents, (domestically 502 cases, and internationally 155 cases) and completed 49 technology transfers; accumulated contracts are around 34 billion dollars.  However, it is slight amount compare to Northwestern University’s annual revenue (198 billion dollars) earning by original technology patent.  According to Severance hospital, most domestic university’s technology profits are just 1% of their R&D investment funds. Yonhap news agency in Korea reported on November 30th, delivered the interview of assistant executive director of the government-run Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) Raymond Yip. In this interview, he told that “as South Korea is set to transform itself from an IP importer to an IP exporter, more South Korean IP owners should consider advancing into China.” The robust of Chinese economic development has boosted demand for IP infrastructures.  According to the article, the latest data provides that China IP industry is growing and Chinese market welcomes Korean IP experts.  Check out the detailed interview here.

Bloomberg Business week on November 29th reported the case of Samsung’s Missing OLED TVs before the Berlin trade show in last August.  According to the article, LG and Samsung are the only companies that can commercially produce OLED displays.  OLED is the $110 billion flat-screen TV industry, expects to wow consumers and revive slumping sales. According to Korean authorities, Samsung’s missing TVs were not lost, but stolen. Check out the detailed high-technology theft case here.
