Korean singer 'PSY' is having global attention with his new song 'gangnam style'.
It has 9 contestants (individuals and companies) for winning this trademark application, including his management agency YG entertainment. The Korean Intellectual Property Office
(KIPO) said that it is nine requests for right, and the contenders are
restaurant, shoemaker, golf related products manufacturer, climbing gear maker,
software developer and office automation firm.
As you can see the applications for the registration list above, they only have Korean letters in different type of style. And some with English letters 'KangNam style' or 'GangNAM STYLE'. YG claims its right to use “GANGNAM STYLE”
and cartoon image of the singer ‘PSY’ stepping onto the English letters. It is also very popular overseas. YG
entertainment sent a ‘copyright violation’ letter to a German online shopping
mall last month, and asked to stop selling the T-shirt printed “Keep calm and
Gangnam Style”.

The KIPO said that they make judgment on a
first come first served basis. YG’s claim was raised later than several other rivals.
One of those rivals was made in mid-August, when the song began to popular in Korea.
But timing is not only decisive factor in deciding a winner, KIPO said.
