this is Galaxy Nexus commercial. The mobile is unlocked by face recognition technology (in this commercial, it is unlocked with smiling face). We are already familiar with this secure and fun face recognition technology. Facebook, cameras and other security systems have this interesting technology. Then how is it work?

A facial recognition is a computer
application for identifying people from a digital image or a video frame
automatically. It is usually used in security systems and this is a rising
technology and can be compared to other systems with biometrics like
fingerprint or eye iris recognition systems. There are 2 steps, extracting features from
the image and identifying it. And there are 3 popular methods for
extracting features.

1. Knowledge-based Methods
This technique uses the information about
the shape of a face and space between eyes, nose and other features. This is
useful when the image or subjects are straight to the camera, but other cases
are hard to get information from the image.
2. Feature-based Methods
This technique uses the visual details of
the skin, as captured in standard digital or scanned images. This technique,
called skin texture analysis, turns the unique lines, patterns, and spots
apparent in a person’s skin into a mathematical space.
3. Template matching Methods
Make all the subjects’ templates and
compare with image or video. This is not influenced by lights or backgrounds,
but affected by size from changing distances and angles.
For identifying faces, two or three-dimensional
face recognition are commonly used. Three-dimensional face recognition is not
affected by changes in lighting like other techniques. It can also identify a
face from a range of viewing angles, including a profile view, but it takes
more time to get face information than 2 dimensional face recognition system.
