Development of long-term patent predictability model

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) and Prof. Kunkuk University Yoon Jang-hyuk said that they developed a model that can predict the long-term sustainability of patents using artificial intelligence. The predictive model is said to learn artificially the relationship between key indicators of US patents and patent retention periods. As companies’ point, since they can select and predict high-value patents, it is expected to help them to develop long-term strategies.

Necessity of screening patent
The duration of patent rights is quite long, 20 years after filing. Why should we select long-term patents? It is due to the maintenance costs of the patent. Patents must be paid annually for maintenance, which is not a problem if the number is small, but the cost of maintaining and filing hundreds or thousands of patents a year like a large company is significant. For this reason, it is very important for companies to manage patents efficiently by pre-selecting patents with high business value.

10% long-term strategy patent
When KISTI applied the predictive model for the latest 160,000 patents this year, it was found that about 16,000 cases, which is about 10%, would be high in the long term. By sector, many patents are concentrated in the fields of information and communication technology and medical convergence technology, and the company with the most long-term strategy patents is IBM, followed by Apple and Google.

Efforts to Increase national competitive power
KISTI and Kunkuk University researchers, who developed the predictive model, said that the research was developed to predict the national long-term response direction or to effectively predict and analyze the long-term technology strategy of competitors. As the researchers say, I hope that the technology sensing system using artificial intelligence can raise the R&D competitive power in Korea.
